A compass (or mariner's compass) is a navigational instrument for pointing out directions by using points of North, South, East and West. A magnetized pointer aligns itself accurately with Earth's magnetic field, which assists in navigating. A compass can be used with a chronometer (which helps determine longitude by using a fixed location) and a sextant (used to measure the angle of the sun to provide latitude) to provide a very accurate navigation capability.
